This is the year to end drowning and promote safer, cleaner waters
Turkish Towel fundraiser
These fancy peshtemals from Turkey are perfect for sauna, beach, pool and picnic. They’re light and airy, turning softer with every wash. Each one is beautifully embroidered with the WaterStrong logo and comes tied with a cotton bow and a little WaterStrong brochure. One towel = 1 lifejacket + support for our lifesaving, earth healing, barrier destroying programs.
Who came up with this great idea? The wonderful Jean Linn at Artistree NW in Troutdale lit up when we asked what she’d consider for her newly expanded shop in a prime spot on Main Street. Towels! She said, and Jean warmly opened her door to WaterStrong, welcoming us to the Gorge community! Following close behind came fearless Cullette at Emler Swim School in Beaverton and Cara at Driftwood Coffee on SW Vermont. You can find a few of these linens there, or order one right here and we’ll mail it to your doorstep.

Hagg Lake Triathlon support
Big news WaterStrong friends! WaterStrong has been invited to join Why Racing as its nonprofit beneficiary for the Hagg Lake Triathlon. This is a really big deal. Hagg Lake is a beloved gathering place for so many of the families we serve in Forest Grove and Hillsboro, and, when I was racing, the Hagg Lake Tri was without comparison my favorite race (and first podium medal!). Just as important, Hagg Lake carries a heavy burden of community trauma when year after year we lose someone in its waters, reminding us all that water safety is fundamental, and by caring for the water, the water also cares for us.
As the nonprofit beneficiary for the Hagg Lake Triathlon, WaterStrong will be featured on the race website, linked on the race registration page to receive donations, and welcomed on-site with an outreach tent.
Please join me. Volunteers will help set up and take down the course, monitor the course, assist athletes and race officials, and host the WaterStrong outreach tent. You'll receive free parking passes and overnight camping at Bobcat Cove, a WaterStrong t-shirt and swim cap, a live concert Saturday night, and a free race bib (for up to 10 volunteers). We’re asked to bring 40 volunteers to make a full showing, but for this first year, let’s do whatever we can.
Please ping me if you can volunteer Friday, July 11 (evening) - Sunday, July 13 (early afternoon) for the Hagg Lake triathlon!
PS. WaterStrong will be back at Hagg Lake August 19 & 20 for EcoSwim summer camp with Bienestar!

Just in time for spring field trips to the lake and the beginning of summer, we’ve been invited back to MLK Elementary for an all-school assembly with a focus on water safety. Get ready to learn the basics: buddy system, SOS on the safety whistle, self-assist, reach assist, and throw assist.

Walking Rivers global event
WalkingRivers is a worldwide call to walk along your favorite river for at least 5-7km dressed in blue, to show that rivers are awesome and worth being taken care of. It is more than an event; it’s a movement to remind us of our shared responsibility to cherish and safeguard the waterbodies that unite us.
Rivers weave through landscapes, communities, and cultures connecting us through uncountable stories and memories. In 2024, Walking Rivers celebrated the first-ever event with over 2,000 participants across five continents from across the globe who all believed that rivers are worth enjoying and protecting.
WaterStrong is thrilled to join the global WalkingRivers movement, a project organized through our friends at Fundacion Botin in Madrid, Spain.
MLK Elementary lifejacket distribution event
This is a major highlight for the year. We have been invited to deliver 350 lifejackets and safety whistles to every student in this Northeast Portland elementary school, pre-K through 5th grade. Here’s what the principal wrote in her weekly newsletter: I remember in high school, one of my friends lost her younger brother due to an inner-tubing accident where no one was wearing life jackets. Along with many of you, we all know someone, or have maybe even had a close call ourselves, with water danger. Thank you so much to Michelle for organizing the lifejacket distribution yesterday. Even if those jackets don’t get used, the water safety information will help keep kids at our school safe. During our next DREAM assembly, students will hear more from this partner organization, WaterStrong.
